La España del “ Sexenio democrático », con las convulsiones sucesivas que caracterizaron a uno de los periodos más críticos de su historia, buscó desde el principio un reconocimiento internacional. El encadenamiento de regímenes, algunos de ellos de cariz revolucionario, favorecieron poco que la Europa bismarckiana considerase a España un socio fiable, garante de la estabilidad continental, de tal forma que los problemas internos –con guerras carlistas por medio– influyeron decisivamente en la ausencia de una política exterior planificada y activa situándose nuestro país en una posición de dependencia y subsidiaridad respecto a los otros.
