Domaine longtemps nglig par les historiens, dplore d'entre de jeu Jean-Claude Daumas, la consommation marchande est l'origine d'une vritable rvolution qui a touch les genres de vie et le quotidien des mnages. Cette rvolution avait t entrevue par Michelet dans Le Peuple (1846), cit avec pertinence ds la premire page de l'ouvrage. Cette histoire de la consommation ratisse large, car elle va bien au-del de la considration des seuls consommateurs et des statistiques sur les mnages, embrassant l'action des forces diverses -industriels, petite et grande distribution, publicitaires, mdias, mouvements de consommateurs, marketing, pouvoirs publics, influences trangres -et surtout, vitant les simplifications abusives et les positions idologiques sur la consommation. Ce sont l les grandes qualits de cet ouvrage de synthse.
