There is a vast amount of information in a mining operation. Effective management of the information can ensure efficient utilization and benefit the organization. This becomes more important when information exchange among users within and/or outside the organization is needed. The rapid development of Information Technology in recent years has revolutionized the way information is managed. A well-designed information system can essentially remove the barriers of organization and location and make the information available at finger tips while maintain the desired security. The authors have recently developed an internet-based geotechnical information system for Canadian underground coal mines: GEOCOAL. It is currently hosted on Dalhousie’s web site and used by the participating organizations. This paper discusses the design of the information system: information categorization, file structure, graphics and mine map utilization, WebPages design, user access and security control. It also gives an outlook on other potential use of the Information Technology in the mineral industry.
