Dans cet article, l’auteur cherche à dresser une première synthèse de la vie musicale dans les églises paroissiales au Québec durant le XIX e siècle, en prenant pour toile de fond la société paroissiale alors en plein développement. Ce premier exercice de synthèse s’appuie essentiellement sur les archives et les monographies locales, sources qui n’ont pas encore été systématiquement exploitées et traitées. En prenant comme figure centrale et emblématique le maître chantre, représentant de la tradition populaire, cet article cherche à ébaucher une histoire des rapports entre la société québécoise et la musique liturgique, histoire confrontée au courant international de la restauration liturgique et grégorienne, et perméable aux influences de la musique non liturgique, voire profane, alors en vogue.
