Ralf König’s <i>Kondom des Grauens</i> and a Socially Just Ethical Aesthetic

Abstract
With his signature wildly satiric style, Ralf König represents in his comic Kondom des Grauens contrasting and even competing social movements of the 1980s: voices from within the homosexual community on the one hand and mainstream messaging about condom use related to the AIDS crisis on the other. This article discusses ways that Kondom des Grauens satirically exaggerates elements of mainstream AIDS messaging with the narrative support of horror-story elements in order to confront the deployment of fear. The article examines ways that the comic’s composition and form force a series of ethical systems into unlikely dialogue, resulting in an original ethical composite graphic narrative system. The comic thus emerges as a counter-text that aims to increase social awareness of the contradictions, struggles, and distress that characterized the time for members of sexual minorities.
