Unter den Lyrikern Kanadas, die seit den 1960er Jahren hervortraten, gilt Al Purdy als der kanadischste, eine nationalliterarische Leitfigur. Kein anderer Dichter des Landes bemühte sich um eine so flächendeckende lyrische Erfassung der unterschiedlichen Regionen vom heimatlichen Süd-Ontario bis zum äußersten arktischen Norden, von den Cariboo-Bergen in British Columbia bis zur Küste von Neufundland; keiner versuchte so beharrlich, die von den Pioniertagen bis in prähistorische Zeit zurückreichende Landesgeschichte in ihrer vielseitigen Bedeutung für das zeitgenössische Bewusstsein aufzuzeigen. Aufgrund seiner Lebenserfahrung bewahrte sich Purdy eine robuste, unakademische Sensibilität gegenüber dem Leben wie der Literatur.
