Abstract
The design of a backpacked tunnel liner to be installed at Brunswick Mine in Canada is demonstrated. Backpacked tunnel liners are used in mine drifts that have deteriorated significantly beyond their intended design. Unlike traditional civil applications, the liner installed in a mine may be subjected to horizontal convergence, point loading and mine seismicity and therefore, standard design methodology does not apply. A generalized model of the liner backpacked with paste fill is used to assess the importance of design parameters such as liner shape and thickness as well as fill properties and packed thickness. A model with site-specific geometry is then used to assess the liner’s ability to withstand static point loads from rock wedges and dynamic point loads from ejected blocks as well as dynamic loading from the excavation surface.
