La pandémie COVID-19 met en exergue les contradictions du tourisme, comme pratique sociale et comme industrie. Son modèle d’affaires, soutenu notamment par une logique de surproduction et d’externalisation des coûts, est appelé à revoir ses critères de performance et de réussite. La crise amène également à se concentrer sur les marchés de proximité, et à reconsidérer les perceptions associées au tourisme local et aux touristes nationaux. Longtemps tenue pour acquise et considérée comme peu rentable, la clientèle locale devient soudainement la planche de salut. La relation entre les résidents et les touristes, la perception du « chez-soi » et de « l’autre », sont également soumises à de nouveaux enjeux.
