Der 1996 erschienene Roman gehört zum breit angelegten Zyklus Une autobiographie américaine (Eine amerikanische Autobiographie), zu dem ferner die Titel L'odeur du café, 1991 (Das Aroma des Cafés), Chronique de la dérive douce, 1994 (Chronik lieblicher Abkunft), Le charme des après-midi sans fin, 1997 (Der Zauber endloser Nachmittage), L'œil du cyclone au printemps, 2000 (Das Sturmauge im Frühjahr), Cris des oiseaux fous, 2000 (Schreie der irren Vögel), und Je suis fatigué, 2001 (Ich bin müde), zählen. In seinem autobiographischen Werk entfaltet der Autor ein buntes Panorama, das seine reichen Erfahrungen im kanadischen Exil auf eine fiktionale Ebene transponiert, womit er sich in die neuere Strömung der ‚autofiction‘ (autobiographische Fiktion) einreiht. In Je suis fatigué, dem provokanten Schlussband des Zyklus, inszeniert der Ich-Erzähler geschickt das Ende seines Schreibens. Angesichts ihrer spezifischen Thematik zählen Laferrières Schriften auch zur ‚écriture migrante‘, jener durch die vielfältigen Schreibweisen der Immigranten bestimmten literarischen Strömung, die die Kultur der kanadischen Provinz Québec seit den 1980er Jahren mit prägt.
