Abstract

Cette maxime morale de Joseph Joubert s’adapte très bien à la façon dont Napoléon Bonaparte a pu réinventer la forme monarchique à son profit au cours des années où il a exercé un pouvoir qui a pu être souvent qualifié abusivement d’absolu. Le Premier consul, puis empereur, s’est appuyé sur plusieurs institutions, officielles ou devenues officielles, pour sa réinvention du concept de monarchie dans le cadre d’un État réorganisé. Sa famille a sans aucun doute été un instrument naturel, bien que peu docile. Ont suivi des expérimentations plus ou moins couronnées de succès, notamment à l’extérieur des frontières, où des États ont pu servir de terrains d’expérience, comme le royaume d’Étrurie, avant que le système de famille ne devienne celui d’une nouvelle forme de vassalité. Enfin, il n’est pas inutile de s’intéresser à la place du temps comme vecteur essentiel de légitimité.
