Abstract
L’histoire du travail colonial s’est developpee vigoureusement dans les pays du Sud depuis la fin du XXe siecle. Elle replace au centre la figure du colonise, non seulement comme victime, mais aussi comme agent a part entiere des societes coloniales. C’est dans cette derniere perspective que les contributions reunies dans le present volume veulent s’inscrire. Ces etudes soulignent specialement l’experience de l’engagisme, la forme dominante entre 1850 et 1950, de ces relations de travail, examinent avec attention les moyens deployes par les engages pour s’adapter a la coercition, ou bien y resister, et parfois, tourner les circonstances a leur avantage, dans les espaces coloniaux diversifies (Antilles, ocean Indien, Asie, Pacifique). Situees au carrefour de la recherche recente en histoire des migrations internationales au Sud et en histoire globale du travail, ces etudes ambitionnent de preciser le role joue par les institutions, les employeurs et l’intervention des migrants eux-memes dans la constitution des marches coloniaux du travail.
