Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This thesis is a work of historical fiction that investigates Black life in the 19th century great lakes region. The purpose of the study was to author a creative work that focused on the historic presence of Black people in the geographic, cultural, and political spaces of Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee, and Wyandot peoples, as all of the above interacted with the settler colonial nations now known as Canada and the United States. The study for this thesis consisted of an overview of historical monographs, historical fictions, as well as interviews with experts and traditional knowledge holders in the fields of Black and Indigenous history of the region in question. The research illuminated a plethora of underwritten cultural, political, and material relationships between Black, Indigenous, and settler colonial peoples. The thesis is an attempt to imagine several people and settings whose experiences and descriptions embody the aforementioned relationships.
