Nicole Cadne a dcouvert Marie-Edme par hasard, en lisant des fragments de ses crits dans l'ouvrage justement encens de Philippe Lejeune, Le moi des demoiselles 1 . Chercheure associe l'universit d'Aix-Marseille, elle a soutenu une thse sur l'image de Marie Stuart et cherche depuis une dizaine d'annes retracer l'tonnant parcours de Marie-Edme Pau, une jeune fille qui se rvait garon et dont la courte existence est ponctue de luttes entre des aspirations professionnelles, artistiques, religieuses, intimes et amoureuses difficilement conciliables dans la France du Second Empire.
