Abstract
ZusammenfassungDer 2008 erschienene frankokanadische Roman der aus den USA stammenden Autorin gehört zur Migrantenliteratur oder „écriture migrante“, die seit den 1990er Jahren in Québec eine starke Konjunktur erlebt. In Anspielung auf die Biographie der Autorin geht es um die Geschichte einer jungen Amerikanerin namens Amy Duchesney, die während der 1960er und 1970er Jahre in der Industrielandschaft von Detroit aufwächst und ihrer tristen Umgebung zu entfliehen sucht. Die Emissionen der Autofabriken legen sich in bläulichen Schattierungen über die Landschaft und prägen den Himmel über Bay City. Amy ist am 4. Juli 1960, dem Jahrestag der amerikanischen Unabhängigkeit, geboren und lebt bis zu ihrem 18. Geburtstag in dem aus Wellblech gebauten Bungalow in der Veronica Lane, den sie mit ihrer Mutter Denise, ihrer Tante Babette und weiteren Verwandten teilt. An diesem Geburtstag setzt sie das Haus in Brand und löscht damit ihre gesamte Familie aus. Sie kommt daraufhin für einige Monate in eine Klinik und muss sich eine neue Identität schaffen. Amy studiert Aeronautik, bringt ein Mädchen zur Welt, das sie Heaven (Himmel) nennt und das zur Zeit der Erzählung etwa zehn Jahre alt ist, reist durch Indien und lebt schließlich als Flugzeugpilotin in New Mexiko. Am Steuer einer Boeing erlebt sie den Himmel in allen Farben.
