Abstract
Cet article examine la représentation des femmes chinoises dans les récits d’ambassadeurs européens des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. S’appuyant sur l’ambassade hollandaise de 1655 mise en récit par Jehan de Nieuhoff et sur l’ambassade anglaise dirigée par Macartney de 1792 à 1794, mise en récit par George Leonard Staunton, ce texte examine d’une part les représentations de la beauté et la construction des genres et soutient, d’autre part que les perceptions à l’égard de la femme sont les résultats du contexte de représentation globale de la Chine à cette époque, soit le passage de la sinophilie à la sinophobie.
