L’étude de la monnaie – d’après les trouvailles et d’après les documents écrits – est l’une des voies qui permettent d’approcher l’étude du commerce pendant le haut Moyen Âge. Du point de vue monétaire, comme dans le domaine politique, l’Italie du Sud est à la convergence des trois zones monétaires méditerranéennes (Byzance, Islâm, Occident latin). Avant l’arrivée des Normands, la monnaie impériale circule surtout en Pouille, la monnaie musulmane de la Calabre à Naples, la monnaie occidentale à Gaète. Au milieu du xie siècle, les troubles en Afrique du Nord arrêtent l’afflux de monnaie musulmane et le départ des autorités byzantines tarit l’afflux de monnaie impériale. D’où une pénurie, que ne peuvent entièrement combler les monnaies royales normandes, qui s’inspirent des frappes orientales ; au xiie siècle, le denier de Provins conquiert de larges zones.
