Mit dieser Romantrilogie, bestehend aus dem 1970 erschienenen Meisterwerk Fifth Business ( Der Fünfte im Spiel , 1984, M. Gridling), The Manticore , 1972 ( Das Fabelwesen , 1985, S. Schaffer), und World of Wonders , 1975 ( Welt der Wunder , 1986, S. Schaffer), gelang dem Autor, der bis dahin vor allem als Dramatiker aufgefallen war, der internationale Durchbruch. Benannt nach jenem Dorf in Ontario, aus dem die drei Protagonisten Dunstable Ramsay, Percy Boyd Staunton und Paul Dempster stammen, zeichnet die Deptford-Trilogie ihre Schicksale nach, die durch ein singuläres Ereignis zeitlebens miteinander verbunden sind.
