Der 1937 erschienene Roman, das Hauptwerk des frankokanadischen Abts und Schriftstellers, stellt in der von Nationalismus und Anglophobie geprägten Epoche der 1930er Jahre einen literarischen Meilenstein dar, zumal es dem Autor gelingt, einerseits den traditionellen Wertkodex der frankophonen Provinz darzustellen und andererseits einen kritischen Blick in die düster gezeichnete Zukunft der kulturell geschlossenen Gesellschaft am St. Lorenz-Strom zu werfen. Die zeitgemäße Verarbeitung der in Quebec stets von neuem aufflammenden Polemik um die Stellung der frankophonen Kanadier innerhalb der föderalistischen Ordnung sowie die häufige Verwendung regionaler Ausdrucksformen im Verbund mit nationalistisch gefärbter Rhetorik, wie sie auch im zeitgenössischen Europa zirkulierte, begünstigte eine positive Rezeption.
