Referencia singular sobre los estudios de las variedades de la lengua española y su enseñanza en el mundo, Francisco Moreno-Fernández es doctor en Lingüística Hispánica por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Académico de la Academia Norteamericana de la Lengua Española desde 2017, actuó como director académico del Instituto Cervantes y de los centros de la misma institución en São Paulo, Chicago y en la Universidad de Harvard. Es catedrático de Lengua Española de la Universidad de Alcalá (España) y catedrático premiado por la fundación Alexander von Humboldt, en la Universidad de Heidelberg (Alemania). Como profesor e investigador visitante, ha estado en las universidades de Londres, Nueva York, Montreal, Tokio, São Paulo, Illinois, entre tantas otras. Podríamos dedicar muchas páginas más para presentar la valiosa bibliografía de Moreno-Fernández para la sociolingüística y dialectología del español. Sin embargo, hemos preferido que hablara el maestro mismo. Para ello, le propusimos que nos contestara unas tantas preguntas para laurear este monográfico que trata de la sociolingüística de la lengua española. En esta entrevista, exploramos las contribuciones del investigador a la enseñanza y a la descripción del castellano y sus variedades. Así, en la primera parte le indagamos sobre el proceso de formación de investigadores sociolingüistas, el lugar de la variación lingüística en el proceso de aprendizaje de español como lengua extranjera (ELE) y en la formación de profesores de ELE y, por último, sobre cómo las instituciones de la lengua (RAE, ASALE, Instituto Cervantes, Gramáticas) actúan o pueden actuar en el fomento del conocimiento de la lengua y sus variedades. En la segunda parte, nos volcamos en la discusión de los estudios descriptivos que se orientan por una perspectiva sociolingüística y dialectológica. Empezamos con la reflexión sobre el abanico de posibilidades investigativas sobre las variedades del español y cómo pueden ayudar los investigadores brasileños en esta labor. Luego, el profesor Moreno-Fernández nos explica un poco sobre los desafíos en el planteamiento de divisiones dialectales del español y comenta su opinión sobre “Qué español enseñar”, obra que ha circulado mucho entre los cursos de formación de profesores de español en Brasil.
