Le temps d’un été, celui marquant son passage du primaire au secondaire, à la fin des années soixante, la narratrice de La soeur de Judith de Lise Tremblay observe le monde autour d’elle, dans un quartier de Chicoutimi. Les « explosions » de la mère ont beau être tempérées par le père, elles sont source de honte pour la jeune fille. Mais qu’est-ce qui les suscite ? En se penchant sur les motifs qui provoquent les colères de la mère, il apparaît que celles-ci sont toutes liées au statut des femmes, subordonnées dans le mariage. Le roman figure ainsi la mère en « rabat-joie féministe » (Ahmed) qui s’élève contre la mystique féminine (Friedan) dont sont nourries les femmes de cette époque qui s’éveille à la modernité. Au seuil de cette nouvelle temporalité, de nouveaux possibles féminins se dressent devant la jeune fille.
