Der 1977 veröffentlichte Roman arbeitet revisionistisch den Unabhängigkeitskampf der Métis-Indianer und ihres Anführers Louis Riel gegen die kanadische Regierung ab 1869 auf. Erzählt aus der anachronistischen Ich-Perspektive des berühmten Métis-Barden Pierre Falcon (der zum Zeitpunkt der Erzählung bereits tot war), formuliert der Roman die ‚Sache der Métis‘ entgegen der etablierten Meinung der kanadischen Historiker.
