Abstract
La terminologie « deuxième génération » d’immigrants demeure largement utilisée par les chercheurs pour désigner les enfants de parents immigrants. Dans cet article, nous critiquons la normalisation de cette terminologie et son potentiel d’extension infinie selon une perspective historique. Nous analysons ses différents sens selon le contexte social et politique, mais aussi selon le pays d’origine des parents et enfin selon le lien historique entre le pays de naissance et le pays d’origine. Alors que la construction identitaire des enfants d’immigrants est complexe et singulière, cette terminologie peut représenter une affirmation identitaire positive pour certains, alors que, pour d’autres elle peut au contraire porter un poids de souffrance sociale.
