Abstract
Der von romantischer Subjektivität geprägte, 1852 veröffentlichte Bericht der Autorin über ihre entbehrungsreichen Jahre im kanadischen Busch stellt einen der Höhepunkte der kanadischen Siedlerliteratur dar. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Berichten der Pionierzeit, etwa dem auf praktischen Nutzen ausgerichteten The Backwoods of Canada von Moodies Schwester Catherine Parr Traill, werden in Roughing It in the Bush Konventionen des empfindsamen Romans sowie des Schauerromans spürbar (tatsächlich verfasste die Pionierin auch einige Romane in diesem Stil). Roughing It in the Bush ist außerdem durch eine auffallende Heterogenität gekennzeichnet: Der autobiographische Bericht wird immer wieder von eingeschobenen Anekdoten und Charakterskizzen, Gedichten und romantischen Naturschilderungen unterbrochen.
