Micro-Mechanical Analysis and Damage Evolution in Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Matrix Composites

Abstract
Three-dimensional multi-cell micro-mechanical models have been developed, and viscoelastic finite element analyses are carried out for cross-ply polymer matrix laminates. The micro-mechanical method is used to predict the overall mechanical behaviour, and to study the initiation of matrix cracking and the subsequent propagation in a [0,903,0]t laminate. The effect of viscoelastic matrix and the resulting time-dependent behaviour on the evolution of residual stresses arising from the manufacturing process in a [0/90]ns laminate and damage initiation and propagation due to externally applied loads, will be presented. In addition, the effect of free-surface in promoting early damage initiation when subject to external loads, and distortion of the surface during cooling process, will be discussed.
