Abstract
Personnage légendaire, saint Nicolas est issu du culte d’un saint originaire de l’Asie mineure qui se répandit à travers l’Europe dès le xe siècle, avant d’atteindre l’Amérique au xviie siècle. À New York, la figure du saint se métamorphosa en Santa Claus au xixe siècle. Au Québec, saint Nicolas rivalisa un temps avec l’Enfant Jésus lors de la distribution des étrennes du jour de l’An. Jamais très populaire, il fut définitivement remplacé par le père Noël dans la deuxième moitié du xxe siècle. S’appuyant sur une enquête orale et sur ses propres souvenirs, l’auteur explique comment cette tradition, introduite dans la famille par son arrière-grand-père, s’est transmise d’une génération à l’autre jusque dans les années 1950.
