Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This article explores three early reports on the pre-Hispanic ruins of El Tajin, Xochicalco and San Juan de Los Llanos (or city of Canton, today Cantona Archaeological Zone). The last one also refers to the indigenous population of Nootka Island (Canada), and their relationship withthe ancient Mexicans, the Otomies and the distant place of their origin. These publications appeared in the capital of New Spain in 1785, 1791and 1790; the first one by well-known publisher Manuel Valdes in his Gazeta de Mexico and the other two by the erudite scholar Antonio Alzatey Ramirez in his Gazeta de la Literatura. The aim of this article is to understand the main sources of archaeological and documentary informationused to produce the reports (bureaucratic, administrative, historical and ethnographic such as recollected by the British Captain James Cook) and to analyze the interests underlying their publication. It also reveals how the Luxembourgian archaeologist traveller Guillermo Dupaix, consulted them and latter explored these three zones. An appendix to the article includes a complete transcription of the report on the ruins of San Juan de Los Llanos by Licenciado Ruiz Canete, published by Alzate in his Gazeta of 1790, which was considered lost by some archaeologists for several decades in the 20th century or its very existence was doubted.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
