Abstract
Comment la monétarisation de la vie sociale a-t-elle été vécue en milieu rural au Québec, à la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle ? L'analyse de plusieurs centaines de causes entendues par un tribunal civil inférieur, la Cour de circuit, montre que le marché local de l'argent et des créances était alors fort actif et qu'il profitait très nettement à certaines élites locales—des avocats, au premier chef—qui tiraient parti de l'endettement et de la pauvreté de concitoyens. Abstract: How did the monetarization of social life unfold in rural Québec in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? Analysis of several hundred cases heard by a lower civil court, the Circuit Court, indicates that the local money and debt markets were both very active at that time and clearly profitable to certain local elites—lawyers above all—who benefited from the indebtedness and poverty of their fellow citizens.
