Abstract
Die Produktion des 1967 im St. Mark's Playhouse in Toronto uraufgeführten und 1970 erschienenen Traumspiels stellte den Höhepunkt von Walcotts Arbeit mit dem ‚Trinidad Theatre Workshop‘ und zugleich einen Markstein in der Entwicklung des karibischen Theaters dar. Walcott hatte mit seiner Truppe jahrelang vor allem Körpersprache, Bewegung und Tanz trainiert und Improvisations- und Konzentrationsübungen gemacht, um Perfektion und Disziplin im körperlichen Spiel zu erzielen. Während eines Aufenthalts in New York hatte er über Brecht Zugang zum japanischen Theater, insbesondere zum Kabuki-Tanztheater, gefunden und diese Erfahrungen in den karibischen Kontext umgesetzt. In seinem Vorwort zu Dream on Monkey Mountain wies Walcott aber auch auf Strindbergs Ett drömspel als Inspiration hin.
