Cet article porte sur l’étude du pacifisme dans la musique et le contexte de création d’oeuvres au xxe siècle en prenant comme objet l’oratorio A World Requiem de l’Anglais John Foulds. Le contexte de l’entre-deux-guerres, du moins dans les hautes sphères culturelles britanniques, était en effet peu réceptif à la construction d’un discours pacifiste et cosmopolite. Comme résultat, l’oeuvre de Foulds a été reléguée au fond d’un tiroir pendant plus de trois quarts de siècle, pour n’être rejouée qu’en 2007 lors des célébrations de l’Armistice. Afin de comprendre la revalorisation de l’oeuvre de Foulds, cet article analyse des critiques musicales parues dans la presse à l’époque de Foulds, mais aussi au moment de la récente recréation de A World Requiem. D’une part, ces critiques montrent comment l’oratorio de Foulds a pu être réévalué. D’une autre part, grâce à cette réévaluation, on constate que l’avènement d’une paix durable constituait déjà un besoin impérieux pour certains artistes de l’entre-deux-guerres ; un besoin qu’ils exprimaient au moment des commémorations des soldats tombés au combat.
