L’objet de cet article est de montrer comment les voyages de Louis-Albert Bourgault-Ducoudray en Grèce en 1874 et 1875 ont été le point de départ d’une réflexion sur le style classique en musique, et d’articuler les éléments constitutifs de la méthode du compositeur-historien, dont le projet est de renouveler la musique contemporaine au contact des sources antiques. Ce projet ancré dans l’idée d’un hellénisme universel est forgé d’abord en Grèce. Bourgault-Ducoudray, prix de Rome en 1861, se livre à des études ethnographiques et il croit découvrir un héritage modal et rythmique conservé dans les chants traditionnels grecs, qu’il repère aussi dans le bassin méditerranéen et en France. S’appuyant sur l’idéologie de l’hellénisme, entretenant un rapport ambivalent avec l’académisme, il définit à partir de 1878 un canon classique et un corpus de musiciens classiques français dans une approche similaire à celle de Taine dans Philosophie de l’art en Grèce (1869). Comparé à Romain Rolland et Guido Adler, Bourgault-Ducoudray promeut au Conservatoire de Paris un style classique national dont les caractéristiques préfigurent celles du « néoclassicisme » des années 1920.
