Abstract
오래전부터 캐나다에 정주하고 있었지만 새롭게 도래한 유럽인의 정복과 착취의 대상이 되었던 아메리카 원주민은 20세기 후반부터 목소리를 내기 시작했다. 외부적으로는 연방 정부와 주정부를 대상으로 구조화된 불평등 상황에 대한 구체적인 개선을 요구하였고, 내부적으로는 그들이 처한 차별적인 현실 상황을 본격적으로 자각하기 시작했다. 무엇보다 문화·예술을 통해 아메리카 원주민은 사회적 불평등에 대한 발언을 개시한다. 시기적으로는 1960년대 후반을, 구체적으로는 영화를 통해 그들이 처한 엄혹한 현실과 고유한 문화가 발현되기 시작한다. 특히 이중국어병용 정책에 기반을 둔 영어권과 불어권에서의 제작 지원이라는 제도적 지원을 기반으로 창작 주체인 아메리카 원주민의 정체성 자각과 다양한 영화 교육이 이루어지면서 많은 작품이 제작된다. 캐나다의 아메리카 원주민 영화는 상업영화보다는 독립영화, 극영화보다는 다큐멘터리 영화의 특성을 보인다. 그들의 영화는 전통적 배급망이 아닌 학교나 커뮤니티 기관 등 공적 기관을 통해 상영이 이루어진다. 작품의 주제는 부당한 과거의 역사를 고발하거나 백인 중심 사회에서의 힘겨운 현실 재현의 특징을 보인다. 소수자의 위치로 인해 정체성의 위기를 극복하기 위한 내적 탐구의 모습이나 과정도 또 다른 주제가 되고 있다. 20세기 후반부터는 소수자적 삶을 실험적 형식의 영화나 시적 에세이 영화로 재현하는 작품들이 새롭게 등장한다. 특히 이 시기에 등장한 젊은 감독들은 연출 방식에서 독창적인 미학적 형식을 취하면서 사회적 갈등 상황보다 원주민 보호구역과 그곳을 둘러싼 자연적 공간을 다양한 방식을 통해 작품 속에서 재현한다.
