Abstract
À l’aube du vingtième siècle, une poignée d’hommes de théâtre questionnent la relation acteur-spectateur et le rapport scène-salle à travers de nouvelles initiatives à l’exemple de celles menées, en Russie, par le metteur en scène Vsevolod Meyerhold qui, dans l’optique d’optimiser l’activité du spectateur, brise le quatrième mur et cherche de nouveaux dispositifs scéniques. Les expériences de ce réformateur, auxquelles peuvent s’en ajouter d’autres, préparent d’une certaine manière celles que nous connaissons aujourd’hui sous le terme de « théâtre immersif » et qui se sont particulièrement affirmées depuis les années quatre-vingt-dix. Or, dans quelle mesure ces dispositifs répondent-ils toujours aux spécificités du théâtre ? Pour apporter une réponse à cette interrogation, nous proposons de montrer non seulement la continuité d’expériences immersives dans l’histoire du théâtre, mais aussi d’en saisir le fonctionnement et les objectifs sur la scène actuelle à travers un regard posé sur le travail de Léonard Matton autour du spectacle Helsingør-château d’Hamlet (Paris, 2018), et sur celui de la compagnie Thespis autour du spectacle Shakespeare’s Ghosts (Lyon, 2019).
