Abstract
Linseed oil also known as flaxseed oil is derived from dried ripe seeds of Linum usitatissimum belonging to the family of Linaceae. Its major growth has been recorded in Europe, India, Canada, China, Argentina and America. And over 200 species of linseed are grown across the world. Linseed oil has gained its worth because of the large amount of phyto-constituents present in it such as fatty acids, dietary fibres, proteins, vitamins, etc. It is exceptionally significant in pharmaceutical industries due to it being the highest contributor of Omega 3 fatty acid. Alpha linolenic acid is present in the highest amount. Linseed oil has a widespread application in medicines as well as food supplement. It is also used as edible oil when it is mixed with other edible oils. A number of pharmacological and therapeutic effects of linseed oil have been studied by various researchers. It also plays a vital role in prevention of diseases like diabetes coronary heart disease, hormonal disease, hypertension and several cancers.
