L’installation française sur les rives du Saint-Laurent est entièrement liée au commerce des fourrures : en 1608, Champlain n’a pas fondé une ville mais un comptoir de fourrures à l’endroit qui deviendra Québec, et, jusqu’à la fondation en 1626-1627 de la Compagnie des Cent Associés, à laquelle Richelieu donna une perspective beaucoup plus large – ce qu’avait d’ailleurs proposé Champlain dès 1616-1617 –, ce ne fut donc qu’un comptoir.
