Le 30 décembre 1821, le préfet des Bouches-du-Rhône reçoit de Toulon, par télégraphe, une information selon laquelle : la corvette américaine l’Ontario, provenant de Mahon, a mouillé dans cette rade ; les intendants de santé lui ont dit de repartir de suite, et ne l’ayant pas fait, des officiers, par deux fois, lui ont dit de reprendre la mer ou qu’on l’y contraindrait par la force. Il a répondu qu’il n’entendait ni l’anglais, ni le français. N’y ayant pas dans cette ville de consul américain...
