Abstract
En 1908, Anatole France publie L’Île des Pingouins. Ce roman historique à épisodes met en scène l’histoire nationale des origines à l’époque contemporaine, sous la forme de la fictive « Pingouinie ». Il détourne l’histoire de façon humoristique et critique, pour battre en brèche deux modèles influents : l’histoire républicaine positiviste et l’histoire cléricale. Or, la poétique du roman évolue à mesure que se développe la civilisation des Pingouins dans la fiction, et les chapitres font se succéder plusieurs influences génériques et stylistiques qui se trouvent parodiées. On propose de rapprocher L’Île des Pingouins de la tradition de l’antiroman. La juxtaposition des emprunts intertextuels met en place le fonctionnement paradoxal et la force subversive de la somme parodique, qui recouvre l’actualité du texte et suggère un pessimisme historique justifié dans le contexte idéologique des années 1905-1908.
