Abstract
Children and youth younger than 19 years of age represent 25% of the population in Canada and are the future of our country. They will live the longest with the consequences of the decisions made by today’s policy makers. No other group is more significantly affected by an inadequate psychosocial or educational environment, or by the exposure to infectious diseases, tobacco, drugs and needless injury. Furthermore, robust evidence links the following: ... Beyond any other single strategy that may be applied, the investment in a framework of sound psychosocial, physical and mental health, and educational opportunities for every one of our children and youth will benefit society as a whole. Furthermore, the experience of the past 20 years or more indicates that research in genetic determinants of disease, vaccine development, injury prevention and population health (almost all of this research has been done in the paediatric population) has been of major importance, physically, socially and economically, to all Canadians.
