 Cette communication s’appuie sur un constat : contrairement aux poèmes de Baudelaire et de Rimbaud, l’œuvre de Mallarmé ne semble pas avoir exercé un ascendant significatif sur les poètes canadiens-français qui, au début du XXe siècle, ont contribué au développement de la modernité littéraire. Faut-il conclure pour autant que l’auteur du « Coup de dés » n’a pas été lu? Certainement pas, puisque les poètes associés à la revue Le Nigog (1918), dont quelques-uns seront qualifiés d’ « exotiques » en raison de leur opposition au régionalisme, s’y réfèrent parfois explicitement. Tel sera l’objet principal de cette communication, qui tentera de mettre en lumière l’héritage direct et indirect de Mallarmé chez deux poètes de cette génération, soit Paul Morin (1889-1963) et René Chopin (1885-1953). Il s’agira d’évaluer dans quelle mesure le lexique qu’ils emploient et l’esthétique qu’ils élaborent révèlent l’existence d’une filiation mallarméenne au Québec. À défaut de conclure que Mallarmé a eu une influence déterminante dans l’histoire de la modernité québécoise, il sera possible de voir comment son héritage est perceptible dans certains poèmes de Morin et de Chopin qui seront commentés brièvement.
