La Première Nation des Pekuakamiulnuatsh (Innus du Lac Saint-Jean), est engagée dans un processus de négociation territoriale depuis plus de quarante ans. Elle travaille présentement avec ses partenaires du Regroupement Petapan en vue de finaliser un projet de traité avec les paliers de gouvernements fédéral et provincial, dans le cadre de la politique sur les revendications territoriales globales. Se situant toujours au fondement de l’affirmation identitaire des Pekuakamiulnuatsh, la notion de territoire demeure indissociable du lien entre langue et territoire, et de la manière dont celui-ci trouve son expression aujourd’hui dans leur langue, le nehlueun, entre autres par l’usage de toponymes, mais également dans les dispositions prévues au projet de traité préparant la voie à l’autonomie gouvernementale pour les générations futures. Le projet de recherche multidisciplinaire Peshunakun, initié par la Première Nation de Mashteuiatsh en 2008, en réponse à un besoin d’affirmation culturelle et politique, met en évidence l’ancrage même de l’identité et de la langue ilnu dans l’espace, à travers une démarche de documentation de l’histoire de l’occupation et de l’utilisation du territoire ancestral. Un éclairage nouveau est ainsi jeté sur la territorialité de cette Première Nation sous l’angle du lien entre leur langue, leurs visions et leurs préoccupations politiques actuelles.
