Abstract
Eric J. Sundquist’s Strangers in the Land: Blacks, Jews, Post-Holocaust America (2005) is generally considered one of the intellectually definitive works on Black-Jewish relations. He argued that the “black-Jewish question is intrinsic to and inextricable from any understanding of American culture and cultural politics in the post-war decades.” Ishmael Scott Reed, the American poet and literary aficionado, is the novelist of such works as The Free-Lance Pallbearers (1967) and Flight to Canada (1976). Reflecting on the 1960s Black Arts Movement, that aesthetic and spiritual sister of the Black Power concept, Reed suggested that Black Arts inspired a whole lot of Black people to write. In doing so, Black writers also gave the example that you did not have to assimilate into mainstream society—that you could do your own thing, get into your own background, your own history, your own tradition, and your own culture.
