Abstract
Ao menos setenta línguas indígenas são faladas no Canadá. Estudos indicam que a maioria das línguas indígenas canadenses é avaliada como em perigo, principalmente, por conta da baixa transmissão destas línguas como primeira língua. Contudo, ao passo que os dados dos censos canadenses mostram o declínio na transmissão de línguas indígenas como primeira língua, estudos sugerem um aumento consistente de aprendizes de línguas indígenas como segunda língua. Os programas de revitalização linguística são parcialmente responsáveis pelo aumento no número de falantes de línguas indígenas como segunda língua no país. Neste artigo apresento um breve panorama das iniciativas de manutenção e revitalização de línguas indígenas no Canadá, com um foco particular nas escolas de imersão Kanien’kéha (Mohawk), as quais são conhecidas pela formação de falantes fluentes desta língua. Estes falantes, por sua vez, em razão de sua fluência na língua e ativismo linguístico, são fundamentais na formação das novas gerações de falantes tanto na comunidade como no contexto acadêmico. Procuro enfatizar o poder das pequenas e grandes iniciativas em prol de um objetivo maior: a preservação e a manutenção de línguas.
