Abstract
The primary goal of this book is to examine the intergenerational transmission of Buddhism among Sri Lankan immigrants in Toronto, Canada, and show how practitioners of Buddhism adapt their religious tradition to their new cultural context. D. Mitra Barua is himself a Theravada Buddhist monk who, in conducting this research, acts as a monastic ethnographer of his communities. Although using ethnographic methods to study two Buddhist temples, Barua also utilizes mixed methodology, drawing on historical-comparative methods, content analysis, surveys, and interviews.
