Abstract
Ce texte, qui aurait dû paraître dans les Mélanges en l’honneur de Jean-Michel Leniaud. Un bretteur au service du patrimoine (Éd. Mare et Martin, 2020) évoque pour nous l’œuvre de Jean-Michel Leniaud sous trois aspects. D’abord, il propose une histoire du patrimoine, un peu à la manière de son Utopie française, essai particulièrement précoce dans l’épistémologie des études patrimoniales : nous souhaitons en effet y questionner certains des soubassements idéologiques et des conditions du savoir qui ont rendu possible, puis ont transformé le corpus patrimonial du Québec. Ensuite, il traite de la contribution, dans cet avènement, de l’histoire de l’art, que Leniaud a tout particulièrement mobilisé dans ses travaux séminaux sur les églises, lesquelles, en France comme au Québec, prédominent dans l’héritage commun des siècles qui nous précèdent, par-delà, affirmons-nous, toute forme de culte qui s’en revendiquerait aujourd’hui. Enfin, il attribue la formation de l’idée d’un tel patrimoine commun au Québec à ce qui a tout d’une filiation française, à travers l’œuvre de Gérard Morisset (1898-1970), premier historien d’art du Québec, lui aussi passé du droit à l’histoire de l’architecture et docteur… de l’École du Louvre.
