Abstract
Mon propos est de relire le roman que Jean Giraudoux a écrit en 1922 sous le titre Siegfried et le Limousin dont il a tiré en 1928 un arrangement théâtral intitulé Siegfried. L’écriture subjective permet d’étendre à l’ensemble du roman une ambiguïté concernant le statut existentiel de l’un de ses personnages. L’écrivain français Forestier « disparu » sur l’un des champs de bataille de la Grande guerre est-il vraiment l’amnésique rebaptisé en Allemagne Siegfried‚ ou est-il décédé et ne survit-il que dans le rêve éveillé du narrateur ? Le roman canadien du Français Louis Hémon‚ Maria Chapdelaine‚ que cite Siegfried et le Limousin et dont il s’inspire (ce qui n’est pas le cas de Siegfried‚ où Forestier ne fera clairement qu’un avec Siegfried) permet d’éclairer le sens de cette ambiguïté dont Giraudoux finira par se désintéresser‚ ayant lui-même fait le deuil d’un ami tombé à la guerre. L’achèvement de ce processus lui permet de restaurer dans son drame une bonne distance et une claire frontière entre les domaines français et allemands‚ de même qu’avec son modèle canadien. L’intérêt de ces relations entre œuvres est que SL est aussi un essai littéraire romançant les notions de sources‚ d’influences‚ etc.
