Abstract
Cet article propose un commentaire du De Civitate Dei XIV, 6-10 dans une perspective à la fois littéraire et théologique. Le fil argumentatif est suivi en fonction des modèles esthétiques sur lesquels Augustin s’appuie pour son analyse des passions. Les deux formes étudiées sont la figure du sage classique ainsi que celle du juste biblique : lequel des modèles convient le mieux pour une exégèse des passions ? Bien qu’Augustin ne retienne pas le modèle classique pour l’analyse des passions dans la condition actuelle de l’humanité, il lui trouve une fonction exégétique relativement aux conditions primitive et dernière. Le modèle classique n’est donc pas rejeté, mais réorienté vers des lieux hors de notre expérience.
