Abstract
La réglementation en termes de fautes et de pénitences a longtemps été négligée par les historiens du monachisme moderne. Pourtant, les documents normatifs produits par les réformateurs et réformatrices bénédictins dans ce domaine sont loin d’être négligeables. Dans leur esprit, ces textes sont fidèles à la règle, mettant en valeur une graduation des fautes et une volonté d’adapter des formules générales aux individus fautifs. En mettant en perspective la responsabilité des supérieurs dans ce domaine, ces textes et ces commentaires en font un des fondements de l’équilibre communautaire tant en milieu masculin que féminin. De même, ils révèlent les difficultés que les communautés, de tout temps, ont eues pour résoudre les problèmes posés par les religieux désignés comme « rebelles, opiniâtres, fugitifs et apostats ».
