Temperature Dependence of the Limiting Efficiency of Bifacial Silicon Solar Cells

Abstract
The limiting efficiency of bifacial silicon solar cells is calculated numerically as a function of temperature from the physical properties of silicon and found to be 0.54% (absolute) less than monofacial cells at room temperature. The optimum thickness decreases as T <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-7.1</sup> . An analytical expression for the temperature coefficient of the open circuit voltage matches the numerical results. The measured temperature coefficients for commercial solar panels are weaker than the values obtained from the limiting efficiency calculation. The difference is explained by the surface and contact recombination rate decreasing with increasing temperature faster than Auger recombination.
