We derive the proper multijunction external radiative efficiency, ηext, that gives logarithmic reduction of open-circuit voltage Voc, similar to the well-known result for single-junction devices. ηextincludes effects of luminescent coupling and is applicable in both multijunction solar cells and photonic power converters (PPCs), which are photovoltaic devices that convert monochromatic light. In the case of multijunction PPCs, we find that ηextis not easily accessible by experiments. We present a measurable quantity, Qext, which is analogous to single-junction ηext, and propose an experiment to measure it. We show with a detailed balance model that Qextmay be substituted with small error for ηextin predicting Vocloss.
