La question de la publication d’un premier roman appelle souvent, dans le champ littéraire, la circulation de scénarios mythiques fréquemment opposés, à savoir celui de l’écrivain inconnu qui accède subitement à la gloire, et celui de l’auteur incompris de son vivant, que seule la postérité reconnaîtra enfin. En réalité, qui sont les auteurs de premiers romans au Québec, dans les dernières années ? À quel âge accèdent-ils à la publication ? Après combien de tentatives ? Comment perçoivent-ils leur travail avec leur éditeur ? Cet article expose en détails les résultats inédits d’une enquête menée en 2010 auprès de 79 auteurs québécois, en parallèle avec une vaste enquête lancée en même temps en France.
