Laissant de côté la distinction histoire-mémoire, parce qu’en littérature il s’agit d’un ensemble libre de configurations narratives qui donnent « un sens », selon Paul Ricœur, Basabose et Semujanga procèdent à la présentation des articles qui, toutes régions francophones confondues, se penchent sur « l’histoire coloniale » et son « sens politique dans les sociétés contemporaines » telles que reflétées dans les littératures francophones (p. 10). Il s’agit de mesurer, de juger les modes de leadership des dirigeants, ou alors les points de rencontres culturels, où la relation n’est pas basée sur un mode de domination. Parmi les phénomènes de continuité se trouvent les enjeux de l’éducation et donc de l’école, et surtout aux Antilles, la question de l’esclavage, l’horreur locale du dix-septième et dix-huitième siècles, fondatrice de l’identité collective. « [L]e rôle de la littérature dans l’espace public » (p. 10) est finalement la question fondamentale du volume, qui sera sans doute utilisé en Amérique du Nord dans les cours de troisième et quatrième années d’université, ou les cours de Maîtrise et doctorat, afin de remplir le mandat gouvernemental de créer des citoyens meilleurs, parce qu’avertis des questions qui structurent les accords et les conflits des divers membres des sociétés américaines ou canadiennes.
